Indian Cultural Precinct

Inspired by a local hero, the mural sits prominently within the heart of the Indian Cultural Precinct in Dandenong.

The mural focuses on the life of Aishwarya Pokkuluri, Greater Dandenong’s 2018 Australia Day Young Leader of the Year awardee. Her work with youth unemployment within the Greater Dandenong area positioned her as an inspirational figure within the community. When discussing ideas for the mural, we decided to focus on the contemporary Indian-Australian identity.

Aishwarya explained how she felt she lived in two separate worlds; one being her traditional Indian upbringing at home and the other being her life outside of home as a young Australian. The wall explores the overlapping relationship between this duality and how second-generation Asian-Australians act as a bridge between both tradition and progress.
